Description

The Department of Biomedical Informatics and the Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity (HOPE) at the University of Utah have numerous federally funded research projects with Community Health Centers (CHC) and state primary care associations focused on improving the health and healthcare of underserved communities. Ongoing research projects include Health Information Technology (HIT) interventions to increase the uptake of referrals to tobacco cessation treatment, colorectal cancer screening, HPV immunization, tele-physical therapy for pain management, and COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

Through active collaboration with leaders in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and the Center for HOPE, the Research Associate-Clinical Informaticist will:

  1. investigate the technical feasibility of implementing HIT interventions within a variety of electronic health record (EHR) systems
  2. help design, implement, and test HIT interventions through the optimization and extension of EHR systems that are used at CHCs (e.g., eClinicalWorks, AthenaHealth, Epic,CompuGroup, NextGen)
  3. help design, implement, and test HIT interventions using other technologies
  4. help design, implement, and test interfacing data streams from a broad spectrum of sources
  5. collaborate in the development of implementation and training plans
  6. serve as a liaison between the informatics team at University of Utah and IT staff from various partners.

Since these projects are research studies, helping to ensure methodological rigor in the research is an especially important aspect of this role. Thus, the clinical informaticist will: work to ensure the HIT interventions are consistent with the designed research plan, thoroughly document the details of interventions and corresponding data (as well as any changes), explore and transform data such that we have a clear picture of what’s occurring in the health records, test HIT changes and data pipelines to ensure they work as intended. To that end, attention to detail and thorough documentation are assets we value in a candidate.

The ideal candidate should at a minimum demonstrate interest and the ability to perform the essential tasks relevant to implementing HIT interventions in a research context within EHR systems at partnering healthcare systems. Training in specific areas and systems will be provided.
